With many of our eagerly anticipated PS5 games being pushed back further into 2022 and beyond, we take a look at the PS4 games that will have a free PS5 upgrade or have already received one.
Some games, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War or Control, only allow free upgrade with the ultimate edition of the game, otherwise the upgrade to PS5 will require a payment. Other games will require a purchase of the upgrade irrespective of the version of the game you own for PS4.
Backward compatibility vs a new gen upgrade
PlayStation 5 is backward compatible, meaning that virtually all of your PS4 games will run on the PS5 with only a few notable exceptions. These include: Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma Volume One, TT Isle of Man – Ride on the Edge 2, Just Deal With It!, Robinson: The Journey, We Sing, Hitman Go: Definitive Edition and Shadwen.
Irrespective of the new gen upgrade, you should be able to play virtually all of your PS4 games on the PS5, and if that’s the case why do you need a new gen upgrade and what’s the difference? Firstly, unlike the PS4, where the best framerate you can hope for was 30fps and unless you own PS4 Pro, the best resolution available to you would be 1080p, the PlayStation 5 can run games in 120fps, allow ray tracing, 3D audio and haptic feedback. Not all games will be optimised for this, however upgrading your games to the new gen will unlock many of these features that were previously unavailable, due to the architecture and the hardware of PlayStation 4.
Backward compatibility only ensures that the new hardware will play games from the previous gen, albeit not optimally. The upgrade to the new gen allows the backward compatible games to be played most optimally
How to upgrade PS4 games to PS5
If you own the game that has a free PS5 upgrade, the upgrade will be applied via a patch, for which you will need to be online and connected to the PlayStation store. The patch will be downloaded and applied automatically for the free games, however for the paid games, you will have to purchase the upgrade and download the patch for the said game.

Some games we’ll have to wait a bit longer to get an upgrade for, but many are already ready for a new gen upgrade. Below you’ll find a list of all games that you can upgrade to PS5 version right now and the improvements:

Upcoming games you’ll be able to upgrade to PS5 for free
If you’ve not yet gotten your hands on a PlayStation 5, you can still buy your favourite games on the PlayStation 4 and then upgrade them with a patch once you’re on a new console.
